- SEXTON GATLIN RACING APRIL 27th RESULTS - BAKERSFIELD UP NEXT ON MAY 18th
(Lakeside, CA, May 4, 2024) Sexton Gatlin Racing had a planned couple of weeks off from its 2024 racing schedule on May 4th and May 11th. After two straight tough weeks at the track, the father and son duo of Brent Sexton and his youngest son Grant could use the rest. They will return to action on May 18th when the Ultimate Sprint Car Series Presented by Inland Rigging makes its second appearance at the Bakersfield Speedway. Last Saturday at Perris Auto Speedway things began on the bright side when 19-year-old Grant sizzled in qualifying on the breezy evening with a time of 16.733. That was the seventh fastest of the 22 cars on hand. Brent's 17.658 was the 19th best time of the night. Heat race action matched the family duo together in the first 10-lapper. Grant, 19, was on the outside of the second row in the fourth position. Brent was two rows behind in seventh. When the Chris Fulton checkered flag ended the short race, Grant was sixth and Brent was seventh. That was very costly for Grant as it guaranteed him of not being in the invert for the first three rows of the main event. Grant, who came into the night tied for 15th in the championship standings with Brent, had a better starting spot than his dad in the 30-lap main. He was on the outside of row four. Brent was near the back on the inside of row 10. Grant, the previous season's USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, was doing well early on and was running in the top 10. However, it all unraveled for him in one fell swoop. In turn four on the 22nd lap, he ended up tangled with three other cars. The four-car incident produced enough damage to knock the teen out of the race with a frustrating 19th-place result. Grant's misfortune left Brent to fly the SGR flag for the remainder of the race. Unfortunately, the 51-year-old did not get much farther. However, his situation was a little more serious. The Tennessee native tangled with another car and flipped in turn four. Fortunately, he climbed out of his car unhurt. However, he had to add more to the list of replacement parts he and Grant will need before May 18th. The finishing order broke the tie between the two in the season-long standings. Brent is now alone in 15th on the data sheet. Grant is a mere five points behind. After the May 18th date at Bakersfield, Sexton Gatlin Racing will be back in action the following week when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars contest one of the nation's longest-running sprint car races, the Annual Salute to Indy, on May 25th. Sexton Gatlin Racing would like to thank the following companies for making the 2024 season possible. East County Electric Works, Keys Brothers, BR Motorsports, Maxima Oil, Automated Interiors, Sexton Fire Protection, BK Wings, Troy Dirt. - THE FIRST OF THREE MAY RACES FOR EDDIE TAFOYA JR. THIS SATURDAY AT KERN
(Chino, CA, May 2, 2024) Veteran sprint car racer Eddie Tafoya Jr. will begin a busy month of racing this Saturday night, May 4th, in the Ultimate Sprint Car Series Presented by Inland Rigging at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway. After taking the Mother's Day weekend off, he will be at the Bakersfield Speedway for the next USCS race on the 18th and at Perris Auto Speedway for the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series annual Salute to Indy on the 25th. Tafoya, 26, comes into Saturday's race ranked 10th after the historical first race of the USCS at the Bakersfield Speedway two weeks ago. Wheeling the Tom and Christy Dunkel #17T at that first race, Tafoya was the ninth fastest of the 30 cars on hand in qualifying. He followed qualifying up with a second-place finish in his heat. In the main, Tafoya, the 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, was moving forward after starting eighth. He marched up to sixth and was streaking toward the top five when mechanical issues forced him to the sidelines with a 22nd place finish. For fans wanting to travel to this week's race, adult tickets are $25.00. For kids 6-13 it is only $10.00. Children 5 and under are free. Advance tickets are available from the track's website at https://www.kernraceway.com/. Hot laps will begin at approximately 5:00 p.m. with opening ceremonies at 6:30. The track is located at 13500 Raceway Boulevard in Bakersfield, California. The office phone number and email are (661) 835-1264 mailto:info@kernraceway.com. Last week at Perris, Tafoya contested his 10th race of the 2024 campaign. He was driving the familiar Tafoya family-owned #51T at the track where he captured The PAS Young Gun title in 2018. The personable Chino Hills, California resident came into the night 12th in the series point standings. A lap of 16.873 was the 12th fastest of the night, placing the pretty car with the red chrome trim inside the second row of heat race #3. He pushed the car to a fifth-place finish in the 10-lapper. For the 30-lap main, which turned wild over the last 10 laps with a couple of red flags and numerous yellows, Tafoya started 12th and drove forward to finish ninth. It was his second top 10 in a row in the USAC/CRA Series and was only surpassed by his sixth-place finish at Perris on March 16th. The performance shot Tafoya up to ninth in the championship standings, only 12 points out of eighth heading into the next series race at Perris on Memorial Day Weekend. Friendly Tafoya is always happy to meet the fans in the pits after every race. He will be signing autographs, posing for photos, and will also have his beautiful 2024 team shirts for sale. For fans who cannot attend the races, the team shirts are available at www.specialty-fasteners.com. Fans can follow Tafoya on Instagram @eddietafoya51. Tafoya and the #51T team would like to thank Specialty Fasteners, Inland Rigging, BR Motorsports, King Racing Products, Gasper Transportation, CMI Precision Machining, Owen's Insurance Services, Keen Concrete, DRC Chassis, and Rider Racing Engines for supporting its racing program. - BRODY ROA GOES FOR TWO USCS WINS IN A ROW SATURDAY AT KERN COUNTY
(Cypress, CA, May 2, 2024) Brody Roa, one of the top traditional sprint car drivers west of the Mississippi, will try to make it two in a row when the Ultimate Sprint Car Series Presented By Inland Rigging visits Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway this Saturday, May 4th, for the Dave Calderwood Memorial. Two weeks ago the Garden Grove, California veteran racer won the series inaugural race on the other side of town at the Bakersfield Speedway. Roa made the most of his first appearance in nearly two years in Jayson May's #8M when he outdistanced the field at the first-ever USCS race. In qualifying, "The Pride of Garden Grove," was the fifth fastest of his group and 11th fastest of the 30 cars on hand. He then started on the pole in his 10-lap heat race and scored the win. He again started on the pole for the 30-lap main and emerged victorious again. Combined with a win in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series last June 24th, Roa has victories in his last two appearances on "The West's Fastest 1/3 Mil High Banked Clay Oval." Entering this week's race, Roa has a six-point lead in the championship standings in the brand-new series. Last week Roa and May raced together for their first time at Perris Auto Speedway. While they had teamed together at other tracks and May came to Perris once with Chase Johnson, last week was their first time together at The PAS. After a fourth-place finish in his 10-lap heat. Roa started the main event in the 15th spot. One of the keys to the main event ended up being staying out of trouble. While the first 20 laps went relatively smoothly with only one yellow, One of the keys to the race was staying over the last 10 laps was staying out of trouble as there was a pair of red flags and a plethora of yellows. The 2023 USAC/CRA champion managed to avoid the chaos and brought May's colorful #8M home in eighth. So far in three main events in 2024, Roa has one win, two top fives, and three top 10s. For fans wanting to travel to this week's race, adult tickets are $25.00. For kids 6-13 it is only $10.00. Advance tickets are available from the track's website at https://www.kernraceway.com/. - DOUBLE TROUBLE FOR SEXTON GATLIN RACING IN THE INAUGURAL USCS RACE AT BAKERSFIELD
(Lakeside, CA, April 26, 2024) The first-ever Ultimate Sprint Car Series race presented by Inland Rigging last Saturday night at the Bakersfield Speedway proved to be a tough one for Sexton Gatlin Racing drivers Brent Sexton and his son Grant as both did not finish the 30-lap main event. On the brighter side, Brent, a two-time California Lightning Sprint Car Series champion, placed sixth in the CLS main. After qualifying concluded, 19-year-old Grant was second fastest in his group and third fastest of the 28 cars who turned in laps on the 1/3 mile track. Brent was matched against Grant in group #1 and was eighth fastest. Being in the same group meant they would also square off in the first heat race of the night. Grant started fourth in the 10-lapper and Brent began in seventh. Grant advanced one spot forward to finish third. That earned him a direct transfer into the A main. Brent finished right where he started and had to take a trip to the B main. The B main ended up being flagged early with Brent in third place. He got a ticket to the 30-lapper but unbeknownst to him at the time, he was not going to get a lot of feature laps in. Early in the going, he slammed the front stretch wall and tore the rear end out of the #44. He was credited with 25th. Grant's fate in the main seemed a lot better. The 2023 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year began the race in 10th but drove forward to the fourth-place spot. In the tight race between the top four, the youngster was all over the second and third-place cars. However, they were mired in heavy-lapped traffic. The odds of trouble with the lappers grew with each passing go around but the laps were dwindling fast. Unfortunately, not fast enough. Going into turn three on lap 28, the second-place car got into a lapper. The third-place car had nowhere to go and plowed into what was quickly turning into a mess. Then the accordion effect swept up Grant and one other car. That tangle proved to be the end of the line for Grant on the night. A top-four finish flew out the window with the crash and he ended up 16th. Not long after the USCS main, Brent started eighth in the 25-lap California Lightning Sprint feature and closed the night with a refreshing sixth-place result. This Saturday, the father and son team will be in action at Perris Auto Speedway in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car race. Ironically, they are tied for 15th place in the championship standings. In addition, Brent is currently second in the series Rookie of the Year race. For fans who would like to see the Sexton's racing at Perris, spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. Adult tickets for the night of exciting dirt track racing action and clean family fun are $30.00. Seniors 65 and over get in for $25.00. For kids 6-12 it is only $5.00, and children 5 and under are admitted free. Advance tickets are available online at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7. They can also be ordered by phone at 1-800-595-4849. For fans who do not wish to purchase tickets in advance, there will be plenty available at the ticket window. The track is located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in the City of Perris. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. After Saturday's race at Perris, the team will take two weeks off from the track. Brent, who is about to celebrate birthday #52, is jumping on a plane on Sunday morning and heading for a fly fishing expedition in Montana. Once he returns, he is headed for several days in Mexico. Up next on the team's racing schedule will be the USCS race at Bakersfield on May 11th. Two weeks later it will return to Perris Auto Speedway for the Salute to Indy on May 25th. Sexton Gatlin Racing would like to thank the following companies for making the 2024 season possible. East County Electric Works, Keys Brothers, BR Motorsports, Maxima Oil, Automated Interiors, Sexton Fire Protection, BK Wings, Troy Dirt. If you or your company are interested in becoming a marketing partner with Sexton Gatlin Racing in 2024, please call (619) 454-6945 or E-mail mailto:sextonfire@cox.net or mailto:sextonfire@gmail.com. - AFTER A GOOD START, MECHANICAL WOES TOOK A TOLL ON TAFOYA AT BAKERSFIELD
(Chino, CA, April 25, 2026) After a good start in the inaugural Ultimate Sprint Car Series race Presented By Inland Rigging at the Bakersfield Speedway, mechanical ills foiled Eddie Tafoya Jr.'s hopes of victory last Saturday night. This Saturday Tafoya will be at his home track, Perris Auto Speedway, for round #5 of the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars Series. Tafoya, in the Tom and Christy Dunkel-owned Inland Rigging #17T, came out in the second of the three qualifying groups and turned in a lap of 13.711. That was good enough for fourth fastest in the group of 10 and the 10th fastest of the 28 cars that recorded qualifying times. Tafoya's time placed him outside the front row for the second heat race in USCS history. The steady driver stayed there for the duration of the 10-lap race. That sounds easier than it was. He had to fend off a couple of determined drivers to hang onto the runnerup spot on "The Fastest 1/3 High Banked Clay Oval In The West." For the main, second-generation racer Tafoya, who spent a lot of time racing with the USAC National Sprint Cars in 2023, came from the outside of row four in the eighth position on the start. It was clear that he had a good car as he advanced one spot forward to seventh before the end of the second go-around. A couple of laps later he was up to sixth and looked to be ready for the top five when he was rocked by mechanical issues and was done for the night. What seemed to be a certain top-five ended up with a frustrating 22nd. Nonetheless, he still comes out of the inaugural event 10th in USCS points. This Saturday night, Tafoya will be back in the family-owned #51T for the USAC/CRA Series event on the track that is nearest to his Chino Hills, California home, Perris Auto Speedway. Tafoya goes into Saturday's race after a season-best USAC/CRA sixth-place finish three weeks ago at the Mohave Valley Raceway. The MVR result advanced him to 12th in the USAC/CRA standings, only 15 points out of 10th. For fans who would like to see Tafoya live in action at Perris, spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. After Saturday, Tafoya will have three races in the month of May. The first two will be USCS races starting with the David Calderwood Memorial at Kevin Harvick's Kern County Raceway on the fourth. On the 18th, he will be back at the Bakersfield Speedway. He will close the month with the prestigious USAC/CRA Salute to Indy at Perris on the 25th. Affable Tafoya is always happy to meet the fans in the pits after every race. He will be signing autographs, posing for photos, and will also have his beautiful 2024 team shirts for sale. For fans who cannot attend the races, the team shirts are available at www.specialty-fasteners.com. Fans can follow Tafoya on Instagram @eddietafoya51. - BRODY ROA GETS HISTORIC WIN IN ULTIMATE SPRINT CAR SERIES INAUGURAL RACE AT BAKERSFIELD
(Cypress, CA, April 24, 2024) Sprint Car racing veteran Brody Roa scored a historic win when he captured the inaugural Inland Rigging Ultimate Sprint Car Series main event last Saturday night at the Bakersfield Speedway. This Saturday, he will be in action in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series at Perris Auto Speedway. At Bakersfield, Roa was reunited with car owner Jayson May for only the second time since the 2022 Turkey Night Grand Prix at Ventura. Their first time back together was at the USAC/CRA race at Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway on April 6. To say things did not go as planned at that event is an understatement. Going into turn three in qualifying, the steering wheel came off and Roa slammed hard into the tractor tires that protect the pit area. Roa was uninjured in the crash, but the car was heavily damaged and he was done for the night. Last Saturday at Bakersfield, things were 180 degrees opposite of Mohave as before winning the main event, Roa led every inch of the way in a stacked 10-lap heat race. However, the team had an issue early on. "To start the night we had an issue with the right rear shock," Roa said. "It had a leak and leaked the nitrogen out of it. That set us back in hot laps and qualifying. So, we had to do some troubleshooting. We really did not get to work on the car setup-wise until the heat race. Luckily, we were good enough right off the bat so it did not take all that much." For the 30-lap main, the Garden Grove, California resident and his restricted 410 #8M started on the pole. After leading the opening lap on "The West's Fastest 1/3 Mile High Banked Clay Oval," Roa slipped back to second. As the race progressed, he lost a couple more spots. However, by lap nine he was headed back toward the front. With just seven laps remaining in the race, Roa found himself in a familiar place. The lead!!! From that point on he was never headed and he raced under the Randy Schweitzer checkered flag with a 10-car length cushion between himself and the second-place car. "It was really dicey in traffic," Roa stated about the main event. "I did not think we were the best car in the feature and did not have the sheer speed like Brody Fuson had. He was really good on a clean racetrack, but he broke before we got to the lapped traffic. That traffic, they had the track covered. You really had to be smart in what direction you went. You had to watch way ahead because we were coming up on them pretty fast. With the track, how slick it was, if you missed it you lost a lot of miles an hour. That is the fun stuff. That is what I enjoy doing, the race craft part of it." "After all those years being so good at Bakersfield, we actually won there last year for the first time," Roa laughed remembering a victory in his own #91R. "I think before that we went from one of the first two rows, to crash, to the work area and back to second. Probably five or six times. Hopefully the Bakersfield "Monkey" is off our back." "I was really comfortable," Roa responded when asked how it felt to get back in May's car for the first time since 2022. "It is like we did not skip a beat. We worked really well a couple of years ago when I drove for him. We never stopped talking. It was comforting getting back in his car. I know what kind of car it is and what kind of preparation he does on it. I had no hesitation jumping back in that thing." While Roa started driving May's car about four years ago and has been a Perris regular since he started driving in the USAC/CRA Series, it will be his first time driving for May there. It will only be May's second time at the track. The first time was a couple of years ago when Chase Johnson was steering the #8M for him. Thus far in 2024, Roa, the 2023 USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series champion, has only made one start at The PAS. Driving for Arizona car owner Chris Bonneau on March 16th, Roa was on his way to victory late in the race when a flat tire sent him to the work area. He had to restart at the back and with just a few laps to work with, he drove back to fourth. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. Adult tickets for the night of exciting dirt track racing action and clean family fun are $30.00. Seniors 65 and over get in for $25.00. - TOMMY MALCOLM BRINGS USAC/CRA POINT LEAD HOME TO PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY
(Perris, CA, April 23, 2024) While it seems like just yesterday, it was about 15 years ago that a small teen showed up at the sign up booth to race a street stock at Perris Auto Speedway. The young driver became an immediate hit with the fans at the track. He went on to become a successful late model racer winning main events around the West Coast. A few years ago, he dropped the cars that had roofs on them to race 410 sprint cars. This Saturday night, for the first time in his career, Tommy "Thunder" Malcolm will enter the pits at the track where it all began as the points leader in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series. The likable driver and his brother Johnny both began their racing careers at Perris. That was natural as their stepfather Dino Napier was one of the top drivers at the track in its early days. Napier captured the championship in the PASSCAR California Champ Truck Series in 2002. The family continued to race at the Riverside County oval until the track dropped the late model class. To continue racing late models, the family team raced up and down the West Coast. After purchasing a sprint car from David Cardey a few years ago, Malcolm paid his dues getting used to the 1200 pound, 900 horsepower open wheel racecar. Never giving up, he came close to victories several times. However, it seems like each time the jaws of defeat would snatch his initial sprint car win away. The most heartbreaking came two years ago at the Bakersfield Speedway. Malcolm was leading the 30-lap main event. During a yellow flag period late in the race, a flat tire sent him to the work area and the back of the pack for the restart. "You would be hard-pressed to find a nicer driver than Tommy," Perris Auto Speedway promoter Don Kazarian said. "He was a nice, respectful teen when he first came to race with us and nothing has changed. He is just as nice today as he was at 15. There is no ego there at all. He lets his driving do the talking and it speaks in volumes." "In the street stocks, he quickly got up to speed and had a big fan following. The same when he jumped up to late models. As soon as he switched to a sprint car, you could tell he was going to be okay. He finally got some wins last season. They were a long time coming and very well deserved. Now he is a contender each time he comes onto the track. He will surely be one of the favorites coming into this Saturday's race." The wait for Malcolm to win his first sprint car race ended at the Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare on May 20th, 2023. The time gap for his second win was not a long one. In fact, he won the prestigious Salute to Indy seven days later at Perris. Malcolm backed those triumphs up with a victory in the Glen Howard Classic at Perris on September 23rd. A third-place finish at Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway three weeks ago propelled the Yucaipa, California driver into the 2024 USAC/CRA point lead. Coming into Saturday's race, he has a one-point lead over Santa Barbara, California's David Gasper. Laveen, Arizona's RJ Johnson, Logan Williams of Yorba Linda, California, and Camarillo's Ricky Lewis round out the top five. Amazingly first to fifth is only separated by 20 points. All but Lewis, who spends the regular season in the Midwest, will be on hand this Saturday night. Besides the third-place finish, thus far in 2024, Malcolm, who was married last year, has two sixth-place results and a seventh. So far this season, he has yet to finish in a position worse than where he started in the four USAC/CRA main events to date. On opening night at Perris, he started 14th and finished sixth. At the second race of the year, which was also at Perris, he began in 11th and placed sixth again. In March at Arizona's Cocopah Speedway in a race that was cut short 10 laps early due to rain, he started and finished seventh. In his third-place finish at Mohave, he started in 10th. That one-point lead in the championship standings could be larger if Malcolm had some better luck in qualifying. With the exception of Cocopah where he was fast qualifier, he has timed in at 15th, 16th, and 12th this season. All of which means he has had to start mid-pack and weave his way through the traffic in three of the four races. In addition to Malcolm and the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars, the GAS Chassis Young Gun Sprints, PAS Senior Sprints, and the PASSCAR Super Stocks and American Factory Stocks will also be in action on Saturday. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m. and the first race will take the green flag at 7:00. For fans who do not wish to purchase tickets in advance, we will have plenty available at the ticket window on Saturday. - FLOWDYNAMICS DRIVER LOGAN WILLIAMS ENJOYING HIS BEST SEASON START WITH USAC/CRA
(Ontario, CA, April 22, 2024) For fans attending Saturday's Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car race at Perris Auto Speedway, one of the drivers to keep an eye on is third-generation racer, Logan Williams. The youngest of the three Williams brothers racing in the now 20-year-old series has yet to finish out of the top 10 in the first four races of 2024. Going into Saturday's race, he is fourth in the championship standings and is only 14 points out of the lead. His teammate Matt McCarthy will join the personable driver at the race on the series home track. Williams' last racing adventure on April 6th, saw him competing on the banked 1/3 mile Mohave Valley Raceway in Arizona. The Yorba Linda, California-based driver qualified seventh fastest in the talent-laden 28-car field with a time of 14.667. He started third in his 10-lap heat race and advanced one spot to second. That served him well as one of the top six qualifiers did not finish in the top four in his heat. That gave Williams the pole for the 30-lap main. Williams would have started seventh if the other driver had finished in the top four. Once the main began, Williams assumed the lead and set the pace over the first two laps before relinquishing the top spot to his oldest brother Cody Williams. He slipped back to third and stayed there until the race's midway point before dropping back a little farther. "I was on the bottom to begin with and it was obviously better on the start," Williams said about the Mohave main. "But it went away pretty quick. Cody got by me a couple of laps later and then KTJ (Kevin Thomas Jr.) got me. I went up to the top with them and was running third until lap 15 or 16 and then there was a yellow. I kind of messed up on the top a little bit and three or four cars got by me on the bottom. So, then I went to the bottom. Then it started taking rubber on the top and three more guys got past me. Just a combination of bad decisions and the track moving a little faster than I thought it was. I would like to have finished better. We had a good enough car to do it. That was a little disappointing but I can't complain about this season. That is for sure." Impressively, the ninth-place finish goes along with fifth, sixth, and seventh-place results in the first three races of the year. It is the best start of his career and he is thoroughly enjoying it. "It feels great," Williams said when asked what it feels like to run up front with the big dogs. "I have been waiting a long time to run up there with them. It feels good. We are figuring some new stuff out and we are trying some different things. It is starting to finally work out. I am just starting to figure out these cars and I have a brand-new car (DRC). The new things we have been doing with the car and the new things we have done with the chassis have been helping a lot." Not to be overlooked is the fact that he is currently, ranked higher in the series point standings than his two older siblings. Austin is two spots and 25 points behind him. Cody, who ended up second at Mohave, is currently 13th. "Yeah, a little bit," Williams laughed when told he currently has bragging rights over his brothers in the USAC/CRA standings. "They still have bragging rights over me because I have not won a race yet. That is my goal. If we can get a couple wins then I could really start bragging." When Williams gets back into action on the 27th at Perris, his teammate McCarthy, who did not contest the Mohave Valley race, will also be on the track. At the season opener in February, the Riverside, California driver was quick right out of the box. He qualified seventh fastest but was knocked out of his heat and the B main due to steering box problems. In March, the youthful-looking driver won his heat race and came from a 13th-place starting spot to finish 10th in the 30-lap A main. Adult tickets to see the Flowdynamics drivers in action on Saturday are $30.00. Seniors 65 and over get in for $25.00. For kids 6-12 it is only $5.00 and children 5 and under are free. Advance tickets are available online at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7 or by calling 1-800-595-4849. For those who do not wish to buy advance tickets, there will be plenty available for everyone at the ticket window on Saturday. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. Perris Auto Speedway is located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in the City of Perris. Take the 215 Freeway. Exit at the Ramona Expressway and go three miles east to the fairgrounds. The track website is http://www.perrisautospeedway.com/ and the office phone number is (951) 940-0134. Whenever you get the chance to meet the Flowdynamics drivers in person, be sure to visit them in the pits. They will be glad to sign autographs for you and each will have their fine-looking team shirts available. If you or your company would like to be a part of one of the West Coast's most prominent sprint car teams in the 2024 season, please contact John McCarthy at 909 930-5522 or mailto:john@flodyinc.com. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. FINISHES SEASON-BEST SIXTH IN MOHAVE VALLEY RACEWAY USAC/CRA SPRINT CAR RACE
(Chino, CA, April 11, 2024) After a rough start to his season in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series, things finally went Eddie Tafoya Jr.'s way when he placed sixth in the main event at the Mohave Valley Raceway. It was the first time this season that the past series Rookie of the Year placed in the top 10. Tafoya put his early season string of bad luck in the rearview mirror when he qualified second fastest in the tough 28-car field with a lap of 14.525. That was just .034 off the night's fast time. A sixth to fourth-place run in his ten-lap heat race sent him straight into the A-main. For the main, Tafoya started inside the third row in fifth and stayed around the top five all race long. When the checkers ended the 30-lapper, the Chino Hills, California driver flew past the flagstand in sixth. The finish was his best at the track since he recorded a third there on April 24th, 2022. All told, he has now competed at the racy little joint located near the Colorado River five times and he has three top-10 finishes. The results in Arizona saw Tafoya leapfrog from 15th in the USAC/CRA championship standings all the way up to 12th. Going into the next series race at Perris Auto Speedway, he could take another leap on the points table as he is only three points out of 11th and 15 points from 10th. Tafoya's woes in the 2024 USAC/CRA Series began at the season opener at Perris on February 24th. While running in the lead pack, he was clobbered from behind and sent careening into the infield crash wall. The impact destroyed the front end and he finished 21st. On March 16th at Perris, he was lightning quick and was running in the top 10 when his steering box failed with only three laps to go. That resulted in a 16th-place finish. Two weeks before the Mohave race, he ended up 12th at the Cocopah Speedway on a wind-blistered track that saw the main end 10-laps early when rain moved in. Tafoya's next appearance in the USAC/CRA Series will come at Perris on April 27th. Unfortunately for Tafoya and the other So Cal sprint car teams, the inaugural Ultimate Sprint Car Series race slated for this Saturday at the Ventura Raceway was canceled due to rain. However, good news is on the horizon. The series, which is presented by Inland Rigging, will kick off its schedule next Saturday, April 20th, at the Bakersfield Speedway. Tafoya will be in the Tom and Christy Dunkel owned Inland Rigging #17T for the historic first race for the new club. Spectator gates for the race on the famous Bakersfield oval will open at 4:00 p.m. with racing at 6.:00. Adult tickets are $20.00. Seniors 65+ and military get in for $18.00. For kids 6-12 it is $15.00 and children 5 and under are free. Parking is free. The track is located at 5001 North Chester Ext. Ave., Bakersfield (93308). The track website is http://www.bakersfieldspeedway.com/ and the office phone number is (661) 393-3373. Tafoya is always happy to meet the fans in the pits after every race. - BRODY ROA BOUNCED OUT OF ACTION BEFORE QUALIFYING AT MOHAVE VALLEY RACEWAY
(Cypress, CA, April 11, 2024) When Brody Roa first got started in racing, his father Brett told him to not get attached to a race car. Last Saturday night at the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car race at Mojave Valley Raceway, he found out exactly why. In qualifying, he sailed it into turn three and the car did not turn. Unfortunately, it did not stop either. It ended up clobbering the tractor tires that protect the pits. It signaled an end to his night before it had really started. When it comes to luck, Brody Roa, the champion of the 2023 USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series, has had a lot of it in the two series races staged in Arizona this year. Unfortunately, all of that luck has been bad. For the second race in a row, the popular driver never saw a green flag in heat race action. A couple of weeks early at the Cocopah Speedway, which is about 190 miles south of Mohave, he gassed up the "Cactus Jack" Yeley #2 before his heat race and the drive shaft sheared off. Thus, two times in a row he made a long drive to get to the races only to be done before the heats. Last Saturday, Roa was back in the seat of a beautiful, brand new Jayson May #8M. It was the first time the duo had teamed up in a year and a half. The venue was the fast 3/8 mile banked Mohave Valley oval that is located near the Colorado River where Roa has starred in the past. However, on this journey, he had no time to shine. Heading into turn three in qualifying, the Garden Grove, California veteran's steering wheel came off. In the blink of an eye, he went from being a race car driver to being a passenger about to embark on a wild ride. Roa shot across the track, and then over the large runoff area on the top of the corner. However, he did not stop there. He went on to violently clobber the tractor tires that protect the pit area. The car tipped over upon impact. Fortunately, Roa climbed out unhurt but the car was thrashed. "This year has not been working out too great," Roa confided about his two 2024 races in the "Grand Canyon State. " Usually, Arizona is pretty good to me. I pissed off the racing gods or something this year. I need to figure out what I did and make it right with them." "We are not really sure yet on exactly what caused it," the veteran lamented. "Getting into three, I would not say the car bounced, but got in and took a set. I was putting some steering wheel into it. Something caused the steering wheel to come off. Once that happened, I was kind of along for the ride." "That is the first time that has ever happened to me," he continued. "I am pretty much, in lack of better words, kind of a "crackhead" about the steering wheel before I go out. I sit in staging and smack the thing up five seconds before I push off. We kind of have theories on what happened but not really sure. We know for sure it was not something coming loose or breaking or anything like that. I hope it is one of those one-in-a-million things." To make things even tougher to swallow is the fact that it was the first time the car was on the track. "He kind of put together two DRCs over the off season," Roa said of car owner May. "I know it had good speed before it happened. It completely destroyed it. Chassis is done and the front end is done. It broke the rear end and driveline. It hit so hard, it ripped the motor out of it. When I talked to Jayson yesterday, he was pulling the motor out and was going to look at it. Hopefully, the motor is fine. We will be ready again in two weeks." Roa will be in an identical car when he returns to action on April 20th at Bakersfield, April 27th at Perris, and at Kevin Harvick's Kern County Raceway on May 4th. "I really appreciate getting to drive for the May family," Roa said. "They are a great group. Going through that after putting a nice, brand new car together and junking it with not even five laps on it is not easy on the heart." Roa's next race will be in the three-time rained-out inaugural race of the Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging at the Bakersfield Speedway on April 20th. Spectator gates for the race on the famous track will open at 4:00 p.m. with racing at 6.00. Adult tickets are $20.00. Seniors 65+ and military get in for $18.00. For kids 6-12 it is $15.00 and children 5 and under are free. Parking is free. The track is located at 5001 North Chester Ext. Ave., Bakersfield (93308). - BRODY ROA RETURNS TO THE SCENE OF ONE OF HIS BIGGEST WINS, MOHAVE VALLEY RACEWAY, THIS SATURDAY
(Cypress, CA, April 4, 2024) Southern California's leading free-agent sprint car driver, Brody Roa, will return to action this Saturday, April 6th, on the track where he recorded one of his most impressive victories. The track is the Mohave Valley Raceway and the series is the USAC/CRA Avanti Windows and Doors Sprint Cars. The competition will be the third of the season for the 2023 series champion. Spectator gates at the 1/3 of a mile banked oval will open at 5:00 PM and the first race will be at 7:00. Roa will be getting back in the #8M 410 owned by Taft, California's Jason May. The duo last teamed up at the 2022 Turkey Night Grand Prix. They were supposed to reunite for last Saturday's inaugural Ultimate Sprint Car Series race presented by Inland Rigging at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway. However, the main event winner throughout California last week was Mother Nature. She released her wrath with fury and canceled all races from the Southern end of the "Golden State" all the way to Nor Cal. Saturday's race will be Roa's fifth on the racy Arizona 3/8 mile, banked clay oval. His first appearance at the track on October 8, 2022, was by far his best. Driving the family owned #91R, things started off in ho-hum fashion when he qualified 11th fastest in the 32-car field. However, by the time his heat race rolled around, the car was a rocket ship. He easily outdistanced the stiff competition in the 10-lapper. Despite the fine performance in the heat, Roa was paying the penalty for the qualifying time when it came to lining up for the main event. He had to start inside the sixth row in 11th and virtually all of the big dogs were in front of him. If betting was allowed, he would have been a long shot to win from there and those who would have wagered on him would have cashed in handsomely. Roa steadily moved his way forward much to the delight of the large crowd who was cheering him on. With just three laps to go, he shot into the lead and sent the grandstands into a frenzy. Three circuits later, he raced under the checkers with a near half straightaway advantage. Roa made three appearances at Mohave Valley on his way to the 2023 USAC/CRA title. A year ago last weekend, he made it two in a row when he bested the tough field at the "Grand Canyon State" track. One month later he nearly did it again! He came from the sixth starting spot to finish second. Six months later he had his worst finish at Mohave Valley. It actually was not bad as he ended up sixth. Thus, after four races at the track, he has a phenomenal main event 2.50 finishing average. After sitting out the initial race this season at Perris Auto Speedway in February, Roa picked up the ride in the Chris Bonneau #15 for round #2 of the 20-year-old series at Perris on March 16th. The veteran driver from Garden Grove, California took the lead on lap 24 of the 30-lap main and seemed destined for victory. However, a freak part failure snatched the win away. The plastic fittings that snap the bleeder hoses into the wheel broke off. The issue sent Roa to the work area where the team made repairs and got him back on the track. With just four laps remaining, he drove from the back all the way up to fourth. Two weeks ago, Roa made the trek to the Cocopah Speedway to drive for long time racer and car owner "Cactus" Jack Yeley. After a disappointing qualifying effort, the team made a bunch of changes to the car with high hopes for the heat race. However, when he hit the throttle warming up for the 10-lapper, something broke and sheared off the drive shaft. That put an early end to his night. Saturday, he hopes for a much better result than he had at Cocopah. Gates at the longtime Arizona track, which is located less than a half hour from downtown Laughlin, will open at 5:00 p.m. The first race of the night will take green flag at 7:00. Adult tickets are $25.00. For active military with proper id, it is $20.00. Kids 6-12 get in for just $15.00 and children five and under are free. It is cash only for tickets (no ATMs on site). Concessions, souvenirs, and the beer garden take cash or cards. For more information, the track website is https://www.mohavevalleyraceway.com/ and the office phone is (928) 346-6000. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. BACK ON TRACK THIS SATURDAY AT MOHAVE VALLEY RACEWAY
(Chino, CA, April 5, 2024) For only the fifth time in his career, Eddie Tafoya Jr. will be competing at the Mohave Valley Raceway this Saturday, April 6th, when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series visits the fast 3/8 of a mile banked oval. It will be the first of two series appearances at the track that is located five minutes from the Colorado River and 20 minutes from downtown Laughlin, Nevada. Saturday's race will be the sixth for the series at the track promoted by second-generation racers Ron & Bill Meyer along with their families. Tafoya, who lives 240 miles southwest of the facility in Chino Hills, California, has competed there four times. The only series race he missed at MVR was 11 months ago when he was away competing at Ohio's Eldora Speedway. His best finish of the four came in his initial outing at the track when he placed third on April 23rd, 2022. Six months later he came back to "Arizona's Baddest Bull Ring," and finished eighth. In 2023 when Tafoya was back and forth between the Midwest and West Coast and was competing with the USAC National Sprint Car Series and USAC/CRA, he raced at the track on April 1st and October 13th. The now-veteran racer finished 12th and 13th. Neither finish was indicative of how the nights went. At the April 1st race, the 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year turned in the third fastest time in qualifying in the 30-car field. He started sixth in his 10-lap heat and finished third. For the main, the pretty #51T started on the inside of row three and stayed in the top five in the early laps of the race. However, he slid to a stop in turn one and had to restart at the back. After going to the rear for causing the yellow, Tafoya put on a show. Over the final 25 laps he passed more cars than any other driver in the race and ended up 12th. When he returned last October he was quick again. After qualifying 10th fastest, he steered his eye-catching car to the win in his heat race. In the main, Tafoya drove to second three separate times. However, each time a yellow came out, the scoring reverted to the last completed lap and he went back to third. He was still third when a red flag halted the action. When the race restarted, Tafoya's engine started to lay down and he wisely rolled it back to the pits to avoid damaging the bullet. He was credited with a 13th-place finish. Tafoya looks to get his season righted this week at Mohave. Through the first three series races of 2024, he has been plagued by bad luck and his best finish has been a 12th. Thus, he is ranked 15th in points. Despite that, he has an excellent chance to climb several spots in the standings at this week's race. Gates at the popular track, which is located less than a half hour from downtown Laughlin, will open at 5:00 p.m. The first green flag of the night will wave at 7:00. After Saturday's race, Tafoya will be in one of the Inland Rigging Cars for the season opener for the Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging at the Ventura Raceway on April 13th. He will follow that up with a USCS race the following week at the Bakersfield Speedway and will close the month in the USAC/CRA race at Perris Auto Speedway on April 27th. Tafoya is always happy to meet the fans in the pits after every race. - LOGAN WILLIAMS IS UP TO THIRD IN THE USAC/CRA STANDINGS GOING INTO MOHAVE VALLEY
(Ontario, CA, April 2, 2024) Logan Williams, the youngest son of National Sprint Car Hall of Famer Rip Williams, continued his impressive early season form when he placed sixth in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series rain-shortened main event at Arizona's Cocopah Speedway. The finish saw the softspoken Flowdynamics driver move from sixth to third in the series championship standings. This week Williams is headed back to the "Grand Canyon State" for round four in the series at the Mohave Valley Raceway. Williams, who lives in Yorba Linda, California, went into the race on the banked 3/8 mile Cocopah oval fresh off a fifth place finish the previous week at Perris Auto Speedway. The Perris race also netted him the "In Memory of Jim and Chet Gardner Hard Charger Award" after starting 15th. Before that at the season opener, he finished seventh at Perris in February. Williams, who has been driving the gorgeous Flowdynamics #5w since April of 2021, started the night off with his best qualifying effort of the young 2024 campaign when he went second fastest at 16.868. He followed that up with a sixth to second run in the second 10-lap heat race of the night. With winds howling and rain fast approaching, Williams lined up on the outside of the third row for the 30-lap main event. Early on, he methodically worked his way forward and drove up to fourth. Running there for several laps, he challenged for the third place spot before eventually slipping back to sixth. While he was still in the hunt for a top-five, the rain took over with 10 laps remaining. A red flag came out and the race was subsequently called complete with Williams sixth. The result gave him three top-seven finishes in the first three races of the year. Also, he has yet to finish in a worse position than he started in all three races. As mentioned, going into Saturday's race at Mohave Valley, Williams is third (tied for third) in the championship standings. He is a mere three-points out of second and only 10 markers behind the point leader. Gates at the popular track, which is located less than a half hour from downtown Laughlin, will open at 5:00 p.m. The first green flag of the night will wave at 7:00. Adult tickets are $25.00. For active military with proper id, it is $20.00. Kids 6-12 get in for $15.00 and children five and under are free. It is cash only for tickets (no ATMs on site). Whenever you get the chance to meet the Flowdynamics drivers in person, be sure to visit them in the pits. They will be glad to sign autographs for you and each will have their fine-looking team shirts available. - R.J. JOHNSON LEADS USAC/CRA SPRINT CARS TO MOHAVE VALLEY
In what has been one of the most competitive starts to the Avanti Windows & Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car season, the chase for the championship resumes this Saturday, April 6th at Mohave Valley Raceway.
- AFTER A WEEK OFF, SEXTON GATLIN RACING IS AT MOHAVE VALLEY RACEWAY THIS SATURDAY
(Lakeside, CA, March 31, 2024) After a week off, Sexton Gatlin Racing team drivers Brent Sexton and his 19-year-old son Grant will be back in action this Saturday night, April 6th, when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series races at Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway. The race will be the first of two in 2024 at the track that is located minutes from the Colorado River. Going into the race on the high-speed all-action banked 1/3 mile oval, 50-year-old Brent, sits 14th in the series championship standings. In addition, he is second in the Rookie of the Year chase driving his Triple X chassis powered by a past Rico Abreu 360 Shaver Racing Engine. In three USAC/CRA races this season, his best finish was a 13th on March 16th at Perris Auto Speedway. In addition to competing in USAC/CRA's 20th season, the Tennessee native contested two open comp sprint car races and two So Cal Lightning Sprint Car events during the California Mid-Winter at the Imperial Valley Raceway. A three-time lightning sprint car champion (1999 & 2008 California Lightning Series and 2022 POWRi Southwest Lightning Series), he placed second and fourth at the two lightning races at Imperial. A week later he was 14th and 16th in the open comp sprints. Grant, who won the coveted USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year award in 2023, has been the victim of bad luck in the first three series races of the year. At the season opener at Perris on March 24th, the 2021 POWRi Lightning Sprint champion was forced out of the action early with overheating issues. Three weeks later after turning a career-best third fastest time in qualifying, he was battling in the top five in the main event when contact with another car sent him catapulting wildly into the catch fence. The frightening crash left the competitive driver with a destroyed race car and a not-so-happy disposition. Last week on the Lakeside, California team's first 2024 trip to Arizona to compete at the Cocopah Speedway, Grant turned in another good qualifying effort being seventh fastest of the 17 cars on hand. Brent qualified 14th. The father and son were matched up in the first 10-lap heat race at the track known as "The Diamond in the Desert." Grant earned the family bragging rights in that one placing sixth with Brent one spot behind in seventh. For the main event, Grant started in eighth and was hoping the prevalent heavy winds would blow away the bad luck he was plagued by in the first two USAC/CRA races of the year. Unfortunately, that was not to be. When the green flag waved he immediately went to the high side to fight with the Cocopah cushion. The talented teen got as far up as seventh before racing bad luck struck again. His pretty #22 car overheated and he wisely pulled it off the track to try and limit the possibility of damage to it. The culprit of the problem was a faulty water pump and the early departure saddled him with a very frustrating 15th-place finish. Brent started the main in 14th and was in the same spot when rain took over the track on lap 20 forcing a premature end to the race. This Saturday night the action swings to the racy Mohave Valley Raceway and both SGR drivers are familiar with the facility. Brent has enjoyed tremendous success on the speedy oval while racing lightning sprints taking three wins on the Meyer family-owned track since 2021. Saturday will be his first time attacking the track in a full-size sprint car. Grant's best outing at Mohave Valley came when he placed third in a POWRi Southwest Lightning main early in his championship season of 2021. Last year he ran three 410 races on the Arizona clay with USAC/CRA and made the A main at two of the three appearances. His best outing of the three happened when he came home sixth on May 6th. Gates at the popular track, which is located less than a half hour from downtown Laughlin, will open at 5:00 p.m. The first green flag of the night will wave at 7:00. Adult tickets are $25.00. For active military with proper id, it is $20.00. Kids 6-12 get in for just $15.00 and children five and under are free. It is cash only for tickets (no ATMs on site). - JEFF DYER EXPERIENCED MIXED RESULTS IN LAST TWO RACES - WEATHER MAY AFFECT WHERE HE RACES SATURDAY
(Yucca Valley, CA, March 20, 2024) For veteran open-wheel racer Jeff Dyer, the past two weeks have produced vastly different results in two separate disciplines of open-wheel competition. On March 9th, the racing California Highway Patrol Officer finished second in the California Lightning Sprint Car Series main event at the Bakersfield Speedway. One week later, he ended up 19th in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series main event at Perris Auto Speedway. Dyer, who turned 41 last week, hopped into his son Seth's car for the impressive performance at Bakersfield. The unselfish teen offered Dyer the ride after the latter lost an engine during the California Mid-Winter Fair races at the Imperial Valley Raceway. The CLS has a throwaway rule where each driver throws out a race throughout the year. The elder Dyer used his throwaway when mechanical ills plagued him at the season-opening race. Thus, he could not afford to sit out the Bakersfield event. However, he was prepared to do so until Seth approached him with an idea. The teen would sit out and use his throwaway and his father would not lose a race. The move paid great dividends for both. Jeff got to race and in doing so, he got seat time in Seth's car and adjusted it for the teen's future races. After qualifying fourth fastest in the 14-car field with a lap of 13.062, the Yucca Valley, California racer placed fourth in his eight-lap heat race. For the main at Bakersfield, Dyer, who won a main event at the track last June, was starting on the inside of row three. After initially slipping back to sixth, the veteran racer moved back to fifth on lap four. Two laps later he executed a daring pass going into turn one. He passed two cars at one time and found himself in third. From laps six through 19, Dyer became mixed up in one of the best scraps for position the CLS has seen in quite some time. It was initially a seesaw battle with Aiden Lange that had them fighting for third place. Simultaneously, they sandwiched the second-place car and suddenly the battle between the two was for the number two spot. Dyer finally took control of that position on lap 19. He set his sights on the race-long leader, but victory was not his to be and he raced home second. When the CLS next hits the track in April, Dyer will be sixth in points. While things went well at Bakersfield, the same could not be said for the March 16th race in the USAC/CRA Series at Perris Auto Speedway. After qualifying with a lap of 17.117, things spiraled downhill in a hurry. In his heat race, lap seven contact with another car knocked him out of the 10-lapper. The tangle destroyed the front shocks, a wheel, and a few other bolt-on parts. Dyer and his crew got the car repaired for the main event and he started the 30-lapper in 19th. Things were going better until lap 22 when disaster struck. As Dyer sped into turn four, a car was stopped on the cushion. With no time to miss the car, Dyer threw it sideways and hit it. The contact saw Dyer get airborne and head back across the track where he landed on top of another car before settling right side up. This time the yellow #39 sustained too much damage and was towed back to the pit area to be loaded back into the trailer. "We hit sideways," he commented about the main event tangle. "It was no man's land at that point in time as I had already committed. We hit Ricky Lewis bounced down the track and then Cody Williams hit us. We were ready to flip and when Cody hit us it brought us back down to earth. Cody had nowhere to go. It (the crash) ripped the rear end out of the car and it destroyed the header and some other bolt-on pieces. Actually, it was not as bad as we thought. The chassis is okay. I thought it was going to be bent for sure. It is all fixable. Unfortunately, I was gone last week and we could not get it fixed for Cocopah." "I really did not expect the track to be that good and I completely missed the setup in qualifying," the CHP Officer nicknamed "Ponch" lamented. "We were way too tight. In the heat, we were doing pretty good and then we got in that tangle. We were pretty good in the main, too. We need to do a little bit more to the car. I called Spike ( the Spike Chassis company) and got some notes from them. Actually, the notes they gave me, we were quite a bit off from where we should be. With the changes they told us, we should be a lot better." Last week Dyer was doing some training at the CHP facility in Sacramento, California. Being there for the week meant he did not have time to fix his car for last Saturday's USAC/CRA race at Arizona's Cocopah Speedway. Weather permitting, he will return to the track for the first race in the new Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging at the Kevin Harvick Kern Raceway this Saturday, March 30th. In case of inclement weather, Dyer and his teenage son will head south to the Barona Raceway for the So Cal Lightning Sprint Car race. If the race happens at Kern, hot laps will begin at 4:45 p.m. and opening ceremonies will be at approximately 6:30. Adult tickets are $25.00. Kids five and under are free. The track is located at 13500 Raceway Boulevard Interstate 5 and South Enos Lane in Bakersfield. The track website is https://www.kernraceway.com/ and the office phone is (661) 835-1264. If the weather gets the best of Kern and Dyer heads to Barona, the track is located at 1754 Wildcat Canyon Road, in Lakeside, California. Gates will open at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday with racing at 6:00. Adult tickets are $20.00. For kids 7 to 17, admission is $10.00. Seniors, Military, and EMTs also get in for $10.00. Children 6 and under and parking are free. Family packs of two adults and two kids are $50.00. The track website https://baronaspeedway.com/ and the phone number is (619) 994-6560. Upcoming on Dyer's schedule is a date at Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway on April 6 for round #4 of the USAC/CRA Series. On April 13th he and Seth will make the long drive north to the Merced Speedway for the opening battle in the annual California Lightning Sprint Cars vs Bay Cities Racing Association Civil War Series. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. HOPES FOR A CHANGE OF LUCK THIS SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE COCOPAH SPEEDWAY
(Chino, CA, March 21, 2024) Eddie Tafoya Jr. hopes to turn around what has so far been a bad luck-plagued season when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars visit Arizona's Cocopah Speedway this Saturday night, March 23rd. The track could turn out to be a slump buster for the popular driver as two years ago this past January, he notched his first second-place finish in the series. The runner-up result combined with seventh and ninth-place finishes on the same weekend kick-started a season where he finished third in series points. Last Saturday night at the USAC/CRA Series race on its home track, Perris Auto Speedway, Tafoya timed in 14th fastest in the 24-car field with a lap of 16.574. He followed that up with a third-place finish in his 10-lap heat. For the main, the 26-year-old started in 14th. Alertly dipping and diving to stay out of the early crashes that plagued many in the field, he was in the top 10 in the second half of the 30-lapper. The now veteran driver was fast in the race as only seven drivers recorded faster laps than his 18.356 on the sixth circuit. However, his effort was short-circuited when his steering box broke on lap 27 sending him into the turn three crash wall. Tafoya was not injured, but his car had to be towed back to the pits and he was credited with a 16th place finish. The race came three weeks after the Chino Hills, California resident was breaking into the top five in the main event when he was clobbered from behind and knocked out of the season-opening feature at Perris. Even though he has had a rough start to the 2024 season, Tafoya is still tied for 16th in the championship standings going into Saturday's race in the "Grand Canyon State." A top finish, which he is more than capable of, should catapult him into the top 10 going into the next series event at Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway on April 6th. Sandwiched in between will be the inaugural race of the Ultimate Sprint Car Series presented by Inland Rigging at Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway on March 30th. Tafoya, the 2018 Perris Auto Speedway Young Guns Champion and 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, made his debut at Cocopah at the January 2022 races. Since that weekend, he has raced at the track three more times. They included the 2022 Western World Championship which featured the USAC National Sprint Cars along with USAC/CRA. He qualified for the A main each night recording 16th and 19th place finishes. Last year in the Western World, Tafoya lost two engines. The second came in the B main when he had third place and a trip to the A main locked up. The front gate will open at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday at Cocopah with the first race at 6:00. Adult tickets are $20.00. Seniors and military with id get in for $18.00. For students 13-17 it is only $10.00 and children 12 & under are free. The track is located at 3450 W. County 15th Street in Somerton, Arizona (85350). The track website is http://www.racecocopahspeedway.com/ and the office phone number is 602-292-7607. Tafoya is always happy to meet the fans in the pits after every race. He will be signing autographs, posing for photos, and will also have his beautiful 2023 team shirts (pictured below) for sale. For those out of town or who cannot make it to the races, the shirts are also available online at specialty-fasteners.com. - EDDIE TAFOYA JR. 2024 USAC/CRA SERIES OPENING NIGHT RESULTS
(Chino, CA, March 1, 2024) Eddie Tafoya Jr's promising opening night in the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series at Perris Auto Speedway came to an end when he was clobbered from behind in the 30-lap main event. One of the favorites for the series title in 2024, his #51T will be repaired and ready for round #2 at the same Riverside County half-mile clay oval on March 16th. Twenty-seven cars showed up for the 2024 season opener on a chilly Southern California night. Tafoya's popular sprint car, adorned with red foil trim, was one of the 27 on hand and he first showed the speed of the flashy machine when he was seventh fastest in hot laps with a best lap of 17.343. That was followed up with a 16.889 time in qualifying, which was 10th fastest in the talent-laden field. Tafoya, 26, started third in the series' first 10-lap heat race of the campaign and advanced up to second by race end. The finish earned him a ticket straight into the 30-lap main event. For the A, the 2018 PAS Young Guns Champion and 2019 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year started on the outside of row four in eighth. Working his way forward, the talented driver was attempting to break into the top five. However, at the end of lap nine, he was clobbered from behind on the front straightaway. The hit triggered a multi-car crash that sent Tafoya hard into the inside wall. The wallop tore the front end out of the car and left him with an annoying 21st-place finish. Tafoya was set to debut in the new Ultimate Sprint Car Series Presented By Inland Rigging this Saturday at the Ventura Raceway. However, on Thursday morning track officials canceled the race due to incoming rain. The race has been rescheduled for April 13th. The veteran racer will now debut in the USCS when it visits Kevin Harvick's Kern Raceway on March 30th. While the Chino Hills, California driver saw this weekend get washed out, he will still have a busy month of on-track activities. This coming Friday and Saturday, March 8th and 9th, Tafoya and Inland Rigging teammates Tommy Dunkel and Austin Williams will be racing during the California Mid-Winter Fair at the Imperial Valley Raceway. Both nights will be complete shows. He will make his first of two 2023 trips to Arizona's Cocopah Speedway on March 23rd. Those races will be joined by the aforementioned March 16th and 30th dates at Perris and Kern. Tafoya's busy schedule will continue in April when he will be racing every Saturday during the month. On April 6th and 27, he will be contesting USAC/CRA races at Mohave Valley Raceway and Perris. Sandwiched in between will be USCS shows at Ventura and the Bakersfield Speedway. - FLOWDYNAMICS SPRINT CAR DRIVERS ARE READY FOR 2024 USAC/CRA OPENER AT PERRIS
(Ontario, CA, February 23, 2024) The Flowdynamics Sprint Car Team, comprised of Matt McCarthy and Logan Williams, is set to make its 2024 debut when Perris Auto Speedway hosts the season opener for the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars. The race, which is the first of 22 for the 20-year-old racing association, will be the first of 10 on the Flowdynamics home track. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 p.m. and the first race will begin at 7:00. Last season saw the Flowdynamics drivers run a more relaxed schedule in the series. Yorba Linda, California's Williams contested 11 races and placed 11th in the series championship standings. McCarthy, who lives in the shadow of the Perris track in nearby Riverside, raced seven times. Williams finished in the top five, five times, and had a season-best fourth-place finish at Perris on June 10th. McCarthy, who was doubling as a little league baseball coach last year, had four top-10 finishes highlighted by a sixth at The PAS on September 23rd. Before their time in the USAC/CRA Series, both of the drivers competed in the Perris Auto Speedway Young Guns. Williams, the son of National Sprint Car Hall of Famer and inaugural USAC/CRA champion Rip Williams, was the first-ever Young Guns Champ in 2013. One year later he was crowned USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year. Three years after Williams won the Rookie of the Year Award, McCarthy captured the same title. After Saturday's race, the Flowdynamics team returns to Perris Auto Speedway for round #2 of the 2024 USAC/CRA championship season on March 16th. Adult tickets for Saturday's race are $30.00. Seniors 65 and over get in for $25.00. For kids 6-12 it is only $5.00 and children 5 and under are free. - BRADEN CHIARAMONTE KICKS OFF 2024 SEASON AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY ON SATURDAY
(El Cajon, CA, February 22, 2024) One of the brightest young stars in open wheel racing, Braden Chiaramonte, will kick off his busy 2024 racing schedule with an appearance in Saturday's Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series 20th anniversary season opener at Perris Auto Speedway. The race will only be the third time the young star has raced a 410 sprint car and the first time he has done so at Perris. 2024 will be the first year in his budding career that sprint cars will be the main focus for the El Cajon, California-based racer. His current plan for the season is to compete in Northern California's Sprint Car Challenge Tour for Tyner Motorsports and the USAC/CRA Series in the family-owned #73B. In addition, he will also be racing some of the biggest micro shows in the nation. Chiaramonte, who turns 17 on Sunday, has raced a 410 sprint car two times in the past. Both of those came late last season at USAC/CRA races in Arizona. In both, he looked like a seasoned veteran and finished ahead of many of the West Coast's top stars. The first effort came at the Mohave Valley Raceway on October 14th. He shocked everyone by qualifying third fastest in the 27-car field and placing fourth in the main after starting ninth and briefly leading at one point. A few weeks later at the Cocopah Speedway near Yuma, Arizona, he raced a 410 sprint car for the second time. Competing against a tougher field, he qualified seventh fastest of the 28 cars on hand. In the main, he started seventh and steered his family-owned #73B forward to finish fifth. The two races in Arizona gave Chiaramonte two top-five finishes in his first two 410 races. That is indeed a rare feet as 410 non-wing sprint cars are among the most volatile race cars on the face of the earth. It usually takes drivers time to get comfortable and mash the throttles in the powerful machines. Saturday's race will not be Chiaramonte's first rodeo at Perris. In fact, he has visited victory circle there in the past with the POWRi Southwest Lightning Sprints. It will also not be his first appearance with the USAC/CRA Series at the famous Riverside County track. On two occasions at the track last year he took on the West Coast's best non-wing 410 open wheel racers. Even though he was racing a 360 against a field of strong 410s, he was moving up to 10th when he was punted into the wall on March 18th. He restarted at the back and came forward to 16th. He returned to the track in July but ended up 20th due to mechanical ills. "Our first two races went really good," Chiaramonte said about racing a 410. "We are still learning car setup and everything. I think the wing sprint cars have helped a lot because you are going so fast. It makes the non-wing cars feel like you are not going so fast. The wing stuff makes you drive a lot straighter. I think that helps a lot, too." This weekend he will be on equal level with the "big guns" with a 410 for the first time at Perris. "I am really excited," the well-spoken teen racer said. "It is going to be fun. That is for sure. Perris is fun, but it is a scary track at the same time. It is definitely a cowboy up track with the high straightaway speeds and the tight corners. You are going so fast on the straightaway and the next thing you know you have a really sharp turn to go through. You can't be scared of it, that is for sure." Great news for fans, but perhaps not the competition, Chiaramonte will be around a lot this season. It looks like he will only miss a handful of races. With good results, he could be a contender for the Rookie of the Year award. "We could be (a contender for the rookie award) if we do good these first couple of races and get a good point lead," Chiaramonte said. We still could have a shot. We will be running Tyner's car in the SCCT Series. I think right now with our schedule between SCCT and USAC, we are only going to miss around six races (USAC)." With his busy sprint car season, Chiaramonte will be cutting down on his micro schedule. "Out in California, we won't be running a lot. We will be running the KKM Challenge race (at Plaza Park in Visalia, California in March). That will be the first one in the micro and then we are going back to Texas again (Texas Micro Mania at Lil Texas Motor Speedway in April). We are going to try and hit big shows in the micro but we are going to focus on the sprint cars." Chiaramonte has brand-new shirts that will be available at Perris Auto Speedway on Saturday. Spectator gates to see the young racing star in action on Saturday will open at 5:00 p.m. with racing at 7:00. Adult tickets for Saturday's race are $30.00. Seniors 65 and over get in for $25.00. For kids 6-12 it is only $5.00 and children 5 and under are free. Advance tickets are available 24 hours a day online at https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7 or by calling 1-800-595-4849. For those who do not want to purchase advance tickets, there will be plenty of tickets for everyone at the ticket window on Saturday. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. The track website is http://www.perrisautospeedway.com/ and the office phone number is (951) 940-0134. Chiaramonte would like to thank all his sponsors who have made his racing efforts possible. - CHRIS LEVENTIS SEEKS THIRD STRAIGHT STREET STOCK TITLE AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY
(Perris, CA, February 19, 2024) This Saturday when the 2024 PASSCAR Series kicks off at Perris Auto Speedway, many eyes will be on veteran driver Chris Leventis. The Rancho Palos Verdes, California racer is seeking his third consecutive street stock championship. If he is successful, he will join legendary PAS star Luke Dodd as the only two street stock drivers to take home three straight crowns. Leventis has a long history of racing stock cars in Southern California. He began on the dirt at legendary Ascot Park in Gardena in the 1980s. However, he took some time off to raise a family before returning to the dirt track wars. To be exact, he took 20 years off. Few drivers return to the cockpit when they sit out for so long, but racing has always been in Leventis' blood. In addition to stock cars at Ascot, he raced motorcycles and go-karts back in the day. He won the Baja 250 once on his motorcycle in the mid-1980s. When he came back he methodically climbed back up the racing ladder and has now won the last two street stock championships at The PAS. He attributes his to a simple theory that is not always attainable in the rough and tumble world of street stock racing. Rolling the car back onto the trailer at the end of the night! Dating back to the start of the 2022 season, Leventis has had perfect attendance having started all 22 races in that time. He only won two races and those victories came in 2023. However, starting with that first race in 2022 he finished in the top four an unheard of 21 straight times. That streak was stopped at the last race of the 2023 season, the Jerry Dodd Champion's Night, when he had car issues. Rather than risk getting the car torn up, he finished back in the pack and as usual, rolled it onto the trailer. "Oh, I was in the back," Leventis said with a laugh recalling last year's finale. "It was really muddy out there and my car would not work. I just stayed out of trouble and stayed out of the way. I had already won the championship and did not really care. That was a rough night so I figured I would just sit back and relax. There was no point in me beating my car up for nothing." "It feels good," Leventis continued when asked how it feels to be in a position to tie Dodd. "I am ready for the challenge. I am going to give it a shot. There are some pretty tough customers out there but we will give it 100%." One of Leventis's major competitors is his son George. Getting faster as he gains experience, the 26-year-old had a top-five finish in the PASSCAR Street Stock standings last season. To make it tougher on himself, the elder Leventis is building a new car for George and was putting some of the finishing touches on that car on Monday night. His offspring is getting better with each passing race and with a brand new car, he could be a major thorn in Leventis' drive to win three titles in a row. But make no mistake about it, the kid is going to have to earn his spurs and is not going to get any slack from his dad. Likewise, the patriarch does not expect any favors from his son. "There is no slack being cut between us," Leventis firmly responded when asked. "That is not allowed. It is all out or nothing and there are no breaks. The break he got from me is he knows everything I know. That gives him a big edge. He can drive. Do not kid yourself, he is going to be some competition this year. He is still a little bit green, but I think he is going to do well." In addition to his own car and his son's car, Leventis will again be fielding a super stock for another Ascot alum, Billy Griffin. When Leventis won a pair of titles at Arizona's Mohave Valley Raceway, Griffin was one of his main competitors, but they never raced against each other at Ascot. In addition to the street stocks, Rickie Lee of Beaumont will be on hand to open the defense of his 2023 PASSCAR Super Stock crown. The Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Cars will be making their 250th appearance with a full field of 410 sprint cars on Saturday. Rounding out the card will be round #1 of the GAS Chassis Young Guns Sprint Car Series and the PAS Senior Sprints. The champion in the Young Guns will take home a brand new GAS Chassis at the end of the year. The first race of the Perris Auto Speedway 2024 campaign will take the green flag at 7:00 p.m. Spectator gates will open two hours earlier at 5:00. - JEFF DYER OPENS A BUSY 2024 SEASON AT SATURDAY'S USAC/CRA RACE AT PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY
(Yucca Valley, CA, February 18, 2024) Sprint car racing California Highway Patrol Officer Jeff Dyer will kick off a busy season when the Avanti Windows and Doors USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series opens its 20th campaign this Saturday night, February 24th, at Perris Auto Speedway. Dyer will be returning to the track for the first time since he closed his 2023 season last October. 2023 ended up being a triumphant year for the Dyer Motorsports team. Jeff Dyer captured the championship in the final season of the POWRi Southwest Lightning Sprint Car Series. In addition, his teenage son, Seth, whacked the field to notch his first win in a SWLS race at the Imperial Valley Raceway on October 21st. As well as that accomplishment, the personable young driver was named the series Rookie of the Year. Despite the triumphs, the season had tribulations. Most notable was Jeff suffering a torn Achilles tendon playing softball last August. Initial reports had "Ponch" done for the season. However, he believed that he could make it back before the year ended. Against the odds, he amazingly returned to action and dominated the competition in a Lightning Sprint Car race at the Mohave Valley Raceway on October 14th. Hard work since then has him nearly as good as new. "It is going well," the Yucca Valley, Californian commented on his rehab. "I am probably about 85% back to normal. It is getting better. In the morning when it is cold out, it is a little stiff until I get up and start walking around. I can pretty much do everything I was doing before." Getting his Achilles straightened out did take some time away from working on the cars for the 2024 season. However, the most important things were recovering from the injury and getting in better shape. Happily, he has achieved both. "First of all, I have been working on myself and my fitness," he said. " I have lost 30 pounds over the off-season. I have been working hard on that. On the cars, we kind of got off to a late start. Me and Seth were kind of burned out through the end of the year. We went through the holidays without touching the cars from the last race. After the new year, we really started getting on it. Now things are starting to get together and we are more excited about it." The plan for 2024 was for Jeff to run all of the Perris USAC/CRA races, a lot of CLS races, and when possible, a few races with the new Ultimate Sprint Car Series. After an impressive run at the end of last season, Seth's main focus this year is on the GAS Chassis Young Gun Sprint Cars at Perris Auto Speedway. However, he will miss the season opener this weekend as his engine is not ready. He will also run as many CLS races as possible. While Seth is out of action this Saturday, he will not have long to wait to get in his first laps of the year. Both he and Jeff will be at the Imperial Valley Raceway when the California Lightning Sprint Car Series starts its 30th season during the Midwinter Fair on March 1st and 2nd. "When we get to Imperial it will be pretty much what we did last year," Jeff said. "The same cars. Well, we built Seth a new car last year so it is ready to go. We made a couple of changes on mine that will hopefully work. I am not going to tell you what they are but we made some drastic changes to my car. We are excited to see what happens with that." Saturday's race, which will be the opener for Perris Auto Speedway's 28th season, will begin at 7:00 p.m. Spectator gates will open at 5:00. Adult tickets are $30.00. Seniors 65 and over get in for $25.00. For kids 6-12 it is only $5.00 and children 5 and under are admitted free. The fairgrounds charge $10.00 for parking. Advance tickets for Saturday's opener are available 24 hours a day at the following link https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/pas/7. You can also order on the phone by calling 1-800-595-4849. If you do not wish to purchase advance tickets, there will be plenty available for everyone at the ticket window on Saturday.
