- Thornton Comes from Eighth for Third Straight Lucas Oil Triumph
FARMER CITY, ILLINOIS (May 10, 2024) - It wasn't an easy win for Ricky Thornton Jr. who from the eighth starting spot to take the lead on the 71st circuit after race leader Shannon Babb slowed on the track. From there, Thornton led the remaining four laps of the Farmer City 74 on Friday night to take the victory. Thornton was the third different leader of the race as he went on to win his third straight Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event, earning $25,000 out of the $85,800 feature purse for his 34th career series win. It was the second ever visit to the Illinois bullring for the series as the event drew a stout 55-car field. Jonathan Davenport came home in the runner-up spot followed by the third straight Big River Steel Podium finish for Garrett Alberson. Dennis Erb Jr. finished fourth followed by 16th-place starter Jimmy Owens, who rounded out the top five finishers. Davenport jumped to the early lead with former Dirt Track World Championship winner Garrett Smith holding down the second spot. Smith held the runner-up position until Thornton, who started on the outside of the fourth row, moved in second around Smith on lap 24. Davenport and Thornton dueled it out for the lead until Babb joined the party, as the veteran Illini racer and fan favorite, came from ninth and powered to the lead of the race on lap 55. Thornton moved by Davenport to take over second as he challenged Babb for the lead up until lap 70 when Babb suddenly slowed on the track and headed to the pit area out of the event. Thornton then went on to lead the final four laps for the win. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane, for the sixth time in 2024, Thornton was relieved the race was over where 21 of the 30 starters finished the race as traffic played a huge role in the event. "I got second to JD and I'm like man it was going to be a real good night for us. We got to traffic, and I closed up on him a little bit and I thought man I've got a shot here, but I don't want to do something dumb and put myself in the wall in three and four. I moved him up a little bit and it really killed my line. I really wanted to go to the top on those restarts and I'm like if I give Babb the bottom, he was going to drive right by me and if JD gets the top he was going to get by me. I don't know but that's probably the hardest we have drove in a while. I want to thank JD for leaving us a lane every time and the same with Shannon there. It was a wild one." Davenport, who is seeking a record-tying fourth Lucas Oil championship came home in the runner-up position after leading the most laps of any driver with 54. "That's the best we have been here by far. It just wasn't good enough. I probably should have got up and run the top a little bit more. I just couldn't steer getting in. We changed a few things and went a lot stiffer on the front. I just couldn't steer good enough to run the top like I wanted to. I just stayed straight and run the middle there. I was pretty good. Man, I hate that for Babb because after he passed me, I was cheering him on." Alberson, who won a regular show last Friday night at Famer City got his third straight and fourth of the year Big River Steel Podium finish as he continues to show improvement though the season. "We have learned some things in the last month or so that seems to have really worked on our car up here. I am just super proud of the team. It's super cool to run here in front of these fans at a track I love to race on. I hadn't had a good finish here in a long time before last week and tonight." The winner's Todd and Vickie Burns, SSI Motorsports, Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Big River Steel, Hoker Trucking, Coltman Farms, Dyno One Inc., West Side Tractor Sales Company, Bilstein Shocks, EMD Wraps, and Sunoco Race Fuels. Completing the top ten were Chris Simpson, Hudson O'Neal, Cody Overton, Ryan Gustin, and Tim McCreadie. - Mintz gets late race pass for 410 Attica win; Schlenk, Markham split late model victories; Miller comes to life for 305 win
ATTICA, Ohio - Craig Mintz was able to maneuver his car anywhere he wanted on a fast Attica Raceway Park Friday, May 10 and it paid off for his 17th career 410 sprint car victory at "Ohio's Finest Racing" venue on Edward Jones Investments-Mike Neill financial advisor/American Powersports Night. The Gibsonburg, Ohio driver - a former Attica 410 sprint track champion - executed a perfect slider on race-long leader Greg Wilson to take the lead on lap 26 of the 30-lap Callie's Performance Products 410 Sprint feature and drove to the $4,000 win over Wilson, Cap Henry, Zeth Sabo and DJ Foos. Henry's third place run helps him close the gap in the All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads-Kistler Racing Products Attica Fremont Championship Series presented by the Baumann Auto Group points as he looks to defending his series' title. "When the tires actually cooled down we got faster. We were really good for about three laps there. Three and four was just kind of hold your own at the top and if you could gain ground in one and two…which this race car could…that helped you get runs down the back stretch to do those sliders. Hats off to these guys, Chris, Rich, my dad, my wife and kids. We do this part time and we like to have fun," said Mintz beside his Real Geese Decoys, Modern Woodman of America, Seagate Sandblasting, Brown Family Construction, Linder's Speed Equipment, Bettsville Legion, DMI Racing, Keizer Wheels backed #09. The Whistle Stop Presents the Dirt Nerds Podcast Powered by Propane UMP Late Models had a busy night at Attica Raceway Park. First a 25 lap make-up feature from last week was held that produced a bizarre and exciting finish. Rusty Schlenk led the first 20 laps but a radiator hose let go and put water down and second place challenger JR Gentry spun. Schlenk went pit side and Ashland, Ohio's Ryan Markham who had also been challenging up front, took the lead and held off a late race challenge from Kyle Moore and Jeff Babcock for his 24th career Attica win worth $3,000. "I knew my car was pretty good and we were right there on them. Sometimes you have to take what you can get," said Markham of his B&B Drain Service, Beer Barrel Drive Thru, After Burner Performance, Chuys Tacos & Margaritas, Monster Motors, Last Mango Soap Company, Backin the Barn, Boutique, Ocala Restaurant Supply, Mar Trucking, Schaeffers Racing Oil by Kevin Hill, TGR Performance sponsored #5M. In the night's regular late model feature Schlenk took the lead from Gentry on lap 14 and held off a late race charge from Moore who had spun on the opening lap and came from the tail. Gentry, Gregg Haskell and Devin Shiels rounded out the top five. It was Schlenk's 40th career win in the late models at Attica. "We have a cooling problem obviously. We blew a radiator hose in the first feature. I was trying to baby it and I was trying to run around there half-throttle but Gentry was there and I over-heated it and blew the hose. That was a $3,000 loss for an $18 part. I was watching the board and I knew Kyle Moore was coming….he's been very good competition. We were running hot again so I wasn't trying to push it," said Schlenk beside his Buckeye Concrete Coatings, Terry Hendricks Auto Group, Velocita USA, Dominator Race Products, Tom Finch Auto, Domination Race Cars, All Star Performance backed #91. The Fremont Fence 305 Sprints also put on a fantastic feature event. Dustin Stroup grabbed the lead at the drop of the green and held the point for nine laps before John Ivy took over. Ivy continued to slice through traffic, leading until lap 20 when defending track champion Jamie Miller came to life. Miller had to fend off Ivy, then Paul Weaver and finally Bryan Sebetto to get his second win of the year at Attica and the 41st 305 win of his career at the track. Sebetto, Weaver, Ivy and Stroup rounded out the top five. "We were way to tight early but as the race went on and the fuel load burned off this car took off," said Miller beside his Boca Construction, JLH General Contractors, Kenny Kolb Farms, Tuck Pointing America, Queen of Clean, Smitty's Pizza, Roberts & Sons Contracting, Pizza Wheel, Crown Battery, Reedtown Tavern, Fostoria Mod Shop, Sandy's Dad, Gressman Powersports, Phil Rister, Slade Shock Technology backed #26. - Five Drivers to Compete for O'Reilly Auto Parts Rookie of the Year in 2024
BATAVIA, Ohio (May 10, 2024) - Five drivers have declared to compete for the title of O'Reilly Auto Parts Rookie of the Year with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series in 2024: Brenden Smith, Carson Ferguson, Clay Harris, Cory Lawler, and Drake Troutman. With O'Reilly Auto Parts returning as the title sponsor of the Rookie of the Year program in 2024, the driver to prevail will once again earn an industry high $20,000. In addition to their cash award, the Rookie of the Year will also receive product certificates from various product manufacturers - valued at an additional $10,000. Second and third place in the final Rookie of the Year standings will pay $5,000 and $2,500 respectively. Brenden Smith, an 18-year-old residing in Dade City, Florida began his racing career in 2009 at just four years old. Following numerous kart victories, Smith made the step up to late models in 2017. Within a year, he'd already earned his first victory. Smith is looking forward to chasing his dream of competing on the national tour this season. The elder of this year's rookie class, Carson Ferguson is a 24-year-old from Lincolnton, North Carolina. Ferguson, who has fielded an entry in the regional spotlight with Paylor Motorsports for several years, filled the void left by Tim McCreadie who left the team in April. Ferguson is aware of the tall task ahead but is up for the challenge and recognizes the experience gained will be crucial to his future in the national scene. 22-year-old Clay Harris of Jupiter, Florida began racing karts locally at age five. After accumulating an impressive 422 karting victories and thirteen championships along the way, Harris made the move to late models in 2017. Clay earned five wins in his first fourteen starts and has continued to find success behind the wheel of late models and modifieds. Cory Lawler is the son of Pennsylvania standout Pancho Lawler. The 22-year-old pilot of the iconic number 93 began his racing career at age eight in quarter midgets. After multiple championships in quarter midgets, Lawler moved up to 125cc micro springs then on to 600cc winged micros where he enjoyed much of the same success including numerous victories and track championships. From there, Lawler stepped into the late model ranks where he has competed alongside his father for the past several years. The father-son duo has now shifted their focus to finding success on the national scene in 2024 and beyond. Like many of his fellow Rookie of the Year contenders, 18-year-old Drake Troutman of Hyndman, Pennsylvania began his career early in life, racing karts at age four. After stacking up over 50 kart victories, Troutman shifted to modifieds at age eleven. After adding a late model to the stable, Troutman has become a standout with over 50 modified and late model triumphs and multiple track championships on his resume. Drivers battling for the O'Reilly Auto Parts Rookie of the Year title in 2024 will pursue the entire Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series schedule and see a scattering of racetracks for the very first time. This year's schedule is composed of 63 events at 28 unique venues across 16 states spanning from January to October. In addition to the increased awards to the Rookie of the Year, the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will pay a $100 cash bonus to the highest finishing rookie driver in each feature event. - Lucas Oil Speedway Spotlight: Jason Pursley looks forward to Heartland Modified Tour visit to his home track
WHEATLAND, MO. (May 9, 2024) - It's pretty safe to say that Jason Pursley has made more laps around Lucas Oil Speedway - especially in a USRA Modified - than anyone else since the track opened in 2006. That is one reason Pursley feels he has at least a fighting chance when the new Heartland Modified Tour rolls into Wheatland for the first time as the headliner of Saturday night's Big Adventure RV Weekly Championship Series program. With $2,000 awaiting the winner of the Arctic Food Services USRA Modified feature, several United States Modified Touring Series stars likely will be on hand as the USMTS series is idle this weekend. Pursley said he always enjoys the challenge of going up against the best of the best in Modified racing. "It's basically gonna be a USMTS show," Pursley said of Saturday. "It was the same way a couple of weeks ago in Humboldt, for the season opener of the Heartland Tour. The USMTS was rained out and those guys show up. When they do, you know they're gonna be really, really tough to beat ... but they're a lot of fun to race with. "If you do happen to run well or beat the, you know that you've done something." A full night of action awaits as the Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mods, Hermitage Lumber POWRi Late Models and O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock cars also will be on the program. All Moms will be admitted free courtesy of Vietti Marketing Group. The Heartland Modified Tour came into being this year to provide a boost to weekly USRA Modified racers, who have seen a steady decline in car count over the last few years. Pursley said it's a welcomed opportunity to help the Modified division throughout the region as the HMT runs in conjunction with weekly programs at the tracks it visits. "I'm real excited about this new series," Pursley said. "The last few years, as the B Mods have grown and MW Mods and all the other Mod classes have come into fruition, the A Mods have kind of been struggling a little bit. I'm hoping this series makes for a little more interest in A Mods and helps the tracks that run A Mods." Pursley, knowing as the "Racing Superintendent" for his job as Superintendent of Hickory County R-1 Schools in Skyline, will have to sit out the first half of this weekend's doubleheader on Friday at Lebanon Midway Speedway. It's graduation night at Skyline High and figures his day job must take precedence. "The job pays a little more than racing, so I guess I'd better go and do my job," Pursley said with a laugh. But he's eager to fire it up on Saturday, hoping that a home-track advantage might help level the playing field against top competition. "If I'm going to have to race against those guys, I'd want it to be at Lucas just because I have so many laps there," he said. "The only USMTS race I almost won was at Lucas, when Jason Krohn ended up beating me and I ended up second. But I'm always excited to race against those guys, especially on my home turf." Pursley had a fifth-place feature run at Humboldt last month in the Heartland Tour opener, then had a second last weekend at Springfield Raceway finishing between USMTS regulars Terry Phillips and Tanner Mullens. While starts have been limited so far, he's ready to see how his nearly new MB Customs car owned by long-time car owner Tom Campbell fares this spring and summer. "Tom got this car last year and we raced it at USRA Nationals and a couple of times this year," Pursley said, noting the red wrap scheme has replaced his traditional blue one. "So far, we've really liked the car. It feels different than the old MB Customs car we had. The corner speed is a lot more than the other one. Any time you have more corner speed, you have more straightaway speed." With five career runner-up finishes in pursuit of a Lucas Oil Speedway track championship, Pursley said his season goals include winning the elusive championship on his home track and earning top-10 in Heartland Modified Tour points. "The Heartland series and Lucas only have about two conflicts, so I think we'll be able to run them both," he said. "So those are our goals and hopefully we can attaint them." This marks the second Weekly Championship Series program of the season at Lucas Oil Speedway after an April 27 rainout. Feature winners on April 20 were Robbie Reed (USRA Modifieds), Ryan Gillmore (USRA B-Mods), Justin Wells (POWRi Late Models) and Derek Brown (USRA Stock Cars).
